And Then There Were None

Fiction | Novel | Adult | Published in 2004

A modern alternative to SparkNotes and CliffsNotes, SuperSummary offers high-quality Study Guides with detailed chapter summaries and analysis of major themes, characters, and more. For select classroom titles, we also provide Teaching Guides with discussion and quiz questions to prompt student engagement.

Discussion/Analysis Prompt

Explain the growth or lack of growth each character experiences as they confront their misdeeds. How does each character cope with their guilt differently? What role does each of the characters play in the demise of their victims? Justice Wargrave claims to be innocent of all crimes prior to his role on the island. Do you think he is correct in his assertion? Is Justice Wargrave justified in condemning the visitors on the island to death? Do you think all the characters were deserving of death or just a few?

Teaching Suggestion:  You may want to permit students to use the prereading list of weapons and characters for reference as they analyze the characters’ crimes and reactions—either conscious or subconscious—to those crimes. Students may benefit from first creating a T-Chart with the characters on one side and their crimes and reactions to the crimes on the other side to reference for discussion.

Differentiation Suggestion: For students who find whole-text analysis particularly challenging, small group work to analyze characters and take additional notes may be beneficial. Some students may also benefit from working through one character at a time in the form of a jigsaw. Instructions on using a jigsaw can be found blurred text
