Symbols & Motifs

Cellphones and Texting

Phones are symbolic of communication, but how characters use them to speak with others emphasizes different aspects of who they are. The way that Nick and Charlie text and Oseman’s use of emojis in the illustrations symbolize the unique forms of communication between the two main characters. For Nick, the volume begins with him at home, staring at a text explaining his behavior. He ends up deleting it, feeling uncomfortable and ashamed of himself, and this represents his difficulty articulating his emotions. He visits Charlie’s house and claims he wanted to speak to him in person, which alludes to the limitations of texting as a form of dialogue. When Charlie and Nick must keep their relationship a secret, they’re often limited to flirting through text while in public. Nick later refers to this and their other means of privacy as “creep[ing] around,” showing how its restrictions have stifled him.

Oseman also occasionally uses emojis, a key motif in the text, to display the feelings or thoughts of her characters. This form of characterization has the same limitations as texting, as an emoji doesn’t offer an in-depth description of the circumstances; however, it acts as a shorthand to communicate something, in this case, to a reader. Additionally, the story is meant to represent and appeal to a youthful demographic, so the inclusion of more conversational narration, texts, and emojis within the illustrations reinforces the tone of the story.

Rain

Rain is a symbol during a significant scene in Heartstopper: Volume 2 and in Nick and Charlie’s budding relationship. After an awkward and painful moment the night before, in which Nick and Charlie kissed but Nick then ran away in embarrassment, Nick arrives at Charlie’s door drenched from the rain. The use of rain as an enhancement of the romantic mood is a classic romance trope and one that effectively accents the relationship between Charlie and Nick. Nick is undergoing personal change and brand-new feelings, and he sees Charlie as someone who is willing to understand and wait for him. When Nick arrives, the downpour represents the emotions overcoming them. As they then drink tea and discuss their sexuality, they remain encircled by the rain outside the house, which provides a sense of privacy, shielding them from everything else. Finally, Charlie lends Nick his umbrella to take home, then he rushes out to give Nick another kiss in the rain. This is the culmination of their confessions and openness with one another, completing rain’s role as a symbol of emotional intensity at that point in their relationship.

The Photograph

The photograph that Nick gifts to Charlie is an important symbol of The Sparks of a First Love, as well as of Nick’s hope to be more open and closer with Charlie in the future. The photograph depicts Charlie and Nick playing in the snow together the previous winter, before anything physical had ever happened between them but when they both already knew that they had feelings for one another. While Nick was always used to the shallower friendships he had with the boys on the rugby team, his dynamic with Charlie was deeper and more meaningful. Nick considers it one of the best days of his life so far and wants to express that to Charlie. After spending months confused and shut inside his feelings, Nick is finally becoming more open and honest about who he is and what he wants, and he wants to celebrate the bond that he and Charlie are forming. Charlie is enamored with the gift and considers it a wonderful way to express affection. Nick also gifts Charlie the photograph because he wants to reassure Charlie that he is not using him or acting with dishonesty. Nick’s feelings for Charlie are genuine and complex, and he is finally finding the courage to express them.
