Short Answer

1. When Nailer sees the clean, new clipper ship, he is reminded that not everyone in the world lives like he does; some people live in safety and relative comfort. (Chapter 1)

2. Nailer thinks that people overvalue blood family, because his own father and Nita’s uncle are a danger to them. To him, chosen family is more important, because Pima and Sadna would risk their own lives to protect him. (Chapter 21)
