Apollo Kagwa is the protagonist of The Changeling. Born to Brian West and Lillian Kagwa, he is raised by his mother after his father attempts to take his life when he is a young child. Lillian saves Apollo, and though the novel doesn’t explicitly state this, it implies that she kills her husband. She later suppresses the details of the incident, hoping that Apollo will forget it. However, Apollo’s memories of this event take the form of a recurring nightmare in which his father returns to him as a faceless man who promises to take Apollo away with him.

As a boy, Apollo remembers his father fondly even though he feels hurt that his father abandoned him. Apollo sees reading as a remnant of the bond between them since he, like his father, likes to read. Apollo holds on to the book Outside Over There by Maurice Sendak as a reminder of his father, understanding that Brian West would read it to him every night. This attachment to literature becomes the bedrock for Apollo’s love of books. After reading a memoir about book collecting and literary archaeology, he is inspired to become a used book dealer, going straight into his career after high school. Though his love for books connects him to his father, it also inspires him to find others who share that love. This leads him to fall in love with Emma Valentine, who is a librarian.

Apollo is a persistent romantic; he patiently waits for Emma to accept his invitation to go out on a date and then waits for her to return from Brazil. When Emma tells him that she met a witch during her travels and made three wishes, Apollo makes a daring promise to fulfill all those wishes without even knowing what they are. When they decide to start a family, Apollo commits himself to Emma’s desire to give birth at home, assisted by her sister Kim as a midwife. Apollo is forced, however, to use his knowledge of home birth classes to assist Emma when she ends up giving birth on a stalled subway train. He names the child Brian after his father, which signals his intent to correct his relationship, replacing his father’s abandonment with his love for his son.

Apollo is so determined to be a better father than his own that it turns him into a “New Dad,” which refers to a trend of attentive fathers who take on a more proactive role in their children’s lives. He regularly posts photos of his son on social media so Emma can see baby Brian when she is at work, but the photos also garner attention from the other people in his life. His desire to be a good father ends up causing him to become distant from Emma—he shuns her when she starts to describe the strange things happening to her and Brian, blaming the problems on her distance and lack of attentiveness. Apollo feels shocked and betrayed by her when she appears to have killed Brian, and he solely blames her for the events that led up to Brian’s death.

Apollo initially seeks revenge against Emma, and he even wants to kill her. Since she is absconding after the incident in which she seems to have murdered Brian, Apollo teams up with William Wheeler to find her on North Brother Island. However, Apollo’s encounter with Cal and the Wise Ones helps him to realize that Emma is not at fault and that he may have been deceived into thinking that his son is dead. He goes on to learn that Brian was replaced at some point by a changeling, echoing the plot of Outside Over There. He also learns that William Wheeler, who calls himself Kinder Garten, was responsible for antagonizing Emma in the first place, validating her claims of the strange things that had happened to her. Apollo then seeks Emma out in Forest Hills to reconcile with her. Together, they overcome Kinder Garten, his father Jorgen Knudsen, and the troll that Jorgen’s ancestor had brought to the US. When Apollo defeats the troll, he is also symbolically freed from his trauma following his father’s abandonment. This allows Apollo to save his son and restore his family.

Emma Valentine

Emma Valentine is the deuteragonist of The Changeling and Apollo’s romantic interest. Emma was raised by her older sister, Kim, after both of their parents died in a house fire. Kim later reveals that their mother had been the one to start the fire and that she attempted to take all their lives in the tragedy. Emma and Kim’s father saved the children, but he resigned himself to the same fate as their mother.

As a child, Emma finds a surrogate guardian in her local librarian, Ms. Rook. Ms. Rook is responsible for Emma’s early exposure to Brazilian cinema. This, in turn, builds her aspiration to move to Brazil when she grows up. Emma’s determination to live out this dream initially gets in the way of her forming a relationship with Apollo. Nevertheless, Emma maintains an international correspondence with Apollo, and after she returns, Apollo and Emma become romantically involved. Her childhood friend, Nichelle, tells Apollo that Emma has always gotten what she wanted. When Emma was in Brazil, Emma met a woman who claimed to be a witch. The witch asked Emma to make three wishes and tied a red string around her wrist; the witch promised that the wishes will be granted by the time the string naturally falls away. Emma wished for a good man, a healthy child, and a life full of adventure. The first two wishes are fulfilled when Apollo asks to start a family with her. The third is ostensibly fulfilled by the events of the novel.

For a section of the novel, Apollo believes that Emma killed their son, Brian. In truth, however, she kills the changeling that Kinder Garten has used to replace Brian after kidnapping him. Emma first suspects that someone is planning something malicious toward Brian when she starts receiving pictures of him and Apollo wherever they go. She consults an online message board for mothers, where others tell her about similar experiences they’ve had. This ultimately connects her to Cal and the Wise Ones, who advise her on the true nature of the changeling and what she can do about it. After Emma kills the changeling, she flees to North Brother Island with Kim’s help. She spends time among the Wise Ones, but ultimately sets out to find the real Brian in New York’s only forest, Forest Hills.

During her time in Forest Hills, she guards the entrance to the cave of the troll that has Brian. Emma gains witchlike powers, which Cal says cause her to take on a luminous appearance. She also manifests a hexing ability as evidenced by her relationship with Jorgen Knudsen—she fills his mind with the words to Maurice Sendak’s Outside Over There. Jorgen makes offerings of sheep’s heads to appease her, but Emma continues to invade his thoughts, making it difficult for Jorgen to rest. Eventually, Apollo comes to reconcile with her, at which point he not only validates her earlier concerns, but also offers to take the burden of watching over the troll away from her, allowing her to rest. Emma kills Kinder Garten, and then she and Apollo work together to overcome the troll and save their child.

Kinder Garten/William Wheeler

Kinder Garten is the antagonist of The Changeling. The son of Jorgen Knudsen, he is raised in the tradition of their family, offering newborn children to the troll. Though Jorgen had taught Kinder Garten to kidnap the children of non-white immigrants and other marginalized groups, Kinder Garten believes in the purity of their family tradition, arguing that his ancestor Nils was right in sacrificing his own child to appease the troll. This prompted Kinder Garten to sacrifice his own child, Agnes, who was named after Nils’s daughter who was given up in the original offering to the troll after he guaranteed Nils and his companions safe passage across the ocean. After giving Agnes to the troll, Kinder Garten became estranged from his wife, Gretta, and their second daughter, Grace, who are so afraid of him that they flee to North Brother Island to hide with Cal and the Wise Ones.

Kinder Garten is a master manipulator. He adopts the persona of William Wheeler to convince Apollo that he is a downbeat but sympathetic father who has become disillusioned with the old ways of raising a family. He claims to have been inspired by the trend of New Dads to change his ways, and he seeks out Apollo’s rare copy of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird to reconcile with his wife. He uses this cover story to allow Apollo to bring him to North Brother Island and destroy the Wise Ones’ camp. Cal antagonizes Kinder Garten, calling him out on his deception, but she nonetheless brings Gretta back to the island to confront and kill Kinder Garten herself. Kinder Garten reaches out to the other men who make up the Kinder Garten group and calls in an artillery strike on the island, which kills Gretta. He then tries to kill the remaining survivors with the help of the troll, who lobs trees at their escape boat.

Kinder Garten uses technology to infiltrate the lives of his kidnapping targets. He has developed several digital apps that enable him to locate, spy on, and manipulate other people using their personal devices. At one point, he even steals $70,000 from Gretta just to purchase the Harper Lee book, which he then defaces in mockery of his wife. Kinder Garten claims that in the digital age, it is easier than ever to get inside someone’s life. This shows that Apollo’s willingness to share pictures of Brian with the world ended up making him an easy target for Kinder Garten to kidnap. Kinder Garten even monetizes his infiltration skills, streaming the footage of his potential kidnapping targets to people on the Internet. He is eventually killed by Emma Valentine when she and Apollo discover this basement lair.
