Chapter 5 Summary

Alone in the hotel lobby, Paisley waits for Will. She is unnerved by the quiet and isolation and thinks about the storm that is predicted to hit the island tomorrow night, cutting them off from the mainland until Monday. While she waits, she peeks into the staff corridor and sees someone in a long robe—Malcolm—walking by. She realizes that she will be in trouble if she’s caught sneaking out and hides, resolving to wait for Will.

After 10 minutes, she decides that Will must have fallen asleep in his room and won’t be coming. She starts to return to her room but then changes her mind, realizing that she never rebels or breaks the rules. She decides to sneak into the park alone and explore, not wanting to miss the chance of seeing it late at night.

While exploring the park, Paisley becomes frightened but reassures herself that she’s being silly. However, she hears a scraping noise behind her and thinks she sees a figure out of the corner of her eye. She heads back to the hotel but chastises herself for being ridiculous. On her way to bed, she texts Will and tells him he missed all the fun. She gets into bed and continues to reassure herself that she is being silly and that there was nothing outside with her.

Chapter 6 Summary

Paisley wakes up early, excited to explore the park, and spends some time working on her next vlog and podcast before breakfast. She continues to think about the previous night and is torn between thinking it was her imagination and thinking it was Will playing a prank on her. At breakfast, she chats with the others and makes plans to explore with Harper and Liam. Ava and James have already paired off and are flirting, though Paisley knows that Ava has a boyfriend. Though they debate waiting for Will, Malcolm tells them that he is probably sleeping and that they have the whole day to explore. Paisley excuses herself and says she is going to wake him up.

Liam interrupts her at the elevator, and she confesses about sneaking out. They knock on Will’s door, and no one answers, and Liam reassures her that Will is probably asleep. He briefly tells Paisley about his family, mentioning that he was raised by his mom and has a selfish uncle and grandparents. Though this is not revealed yet, Liam has murdered Will in the night as part of a plot to ruin his uncle. He teases Paisley by racing her back to the elevator, and they head to the park.

Chapter 7 Summary

At the main gate of the park, Reeve and Harper are waiting for Paisley and Liam. Reeve offers to show them the staff entrance to the park, and Harper and Paisley readily agree, though Liam seems less interested. Reeve shows them a beach area for staff only and offers to bring Paisley back later to swim. She blushes and agrees, liking the attention but surprised that he is flirting with her. They agree to come after lunch as a group and go back to the amusement part. En route, Liam and Paisley discuss Malcolm. Liam argues that Malcolm has more than he needs and doesn’t help others, though he could solve world problems with his money. Paisley agrees but privately thinks that Liam drives a Range Rover and doesn’t seem to be hurting for money himself.

After riding coasters, Paisley wants to take a break and insists on checking in on Will again. Liam accompanies her, and there is no answer when they bang on his hotel door. They call Camilla, who lets them in to check the room. There is no one inside.

Chapter 8 Summary

Inside the room, Paisley uses her deductive skills and points out that Will’s bed is neatly made, and all his things are still in his suitcase, as if he never slept there. Even more suspicious is the fact that his phone is still charging on his nightstand. Liam quietly asks Paisley if she thinks Will snuck out after her and somehow drowned.

The group meets up with the others, including Malcolm and the staff. They split up to look for Will in groups. Reeve takes Paisley and his group to start looking at the jetty, where they discover, to their horror, that the boat is gone. Reeve assumes Will took it for a joyride, but Paisley argues that he wouldn’t have left his phone behind.

Malcolm sends Reeve to check the CCTV footage of the island and allows Paisley to come along. She hopes that she can quietly tell Reeve about Will’s plan with her to sneak out and that he won’t tell Malcolm and get her kicked off the island. In the CCTV room, Reeve tells Paisley that he went to bed last night around 2 am. Paisley is nervous, realizing that he was awake when she was sneaking around the hotel.

Chapter 9 Summary

Paisley starts to wonder if Reeve was the one sneaking around and scaring her the night before. She is relieved when he suggests beginning the search of the film at 6 am and hopes that she won’t have to confess to sneaking out. However, as they start to search, Reeve realizes that all the film has been deleted. Initially, he asks Paisley if she or the others are to blame, but she points out that he is the only one with access to the room. He becomes upset and worries that Malcolm will blame him.

Upstairs, the room begins to descend into panic, especially when they learn that the CCTV has been erased. To add to everyone’s stress, Gibson notices that cell service and Wi-Fi are both down, effectively cutting them off from the island. Camilla starts to panic, but Malcolm whispers to her and seems to calm her down. Malcolm divides the group again, asking some people to search the island while he tries to get into contact with the mainland.

Reeve and Paisley go back to the jetty, and Reeve explains that he wants to see if the boat sank or was taken, which will solve at least one mystery. They discover that the rope at the dock is not ripped or cut but taken off, which implies that someone did it to steal the boat. When they report this to Malcolm, he is relieved and claims that some “random dumb kids” stole a boat. Paisley is not so sure and worries that the culprit might still be on the island with them.

Chapter 10 Summary

Paisley accompanies Reeve to the service room, which is in a dark basement. She remarks on how creepy it is, and he teases her for being scared since she is supposed to be an expert on true crime. They wonder if someone has used a cell phone jammer to block calls from the island, and why someone would play this kind of prank on them. Inside the service room, they discover that all the wires to the internet have been cut, indicating that someone has deliberately vandalized it.

Upstairs, Camilla tells them that she can’t find Kenna, the cook. They try to radio Malcolm but get no response. Reeve orders Ava and Camilla to find Malcolm and the others to sweep the park while he and Gibson try to fix the internet. James is annoyed and does not seem to grasp the gravity of the situation, but Paisley and the others are worried.

Chapters 5-10 Analysis

Preston uses the setting to intensify the tension in these chapters, especially during Paisley’s solo walk through the dark park in Chapter 5. While she waits for Will in the hotel lobby, she starts to fixate on the Gothic architecture, looking at “every frightening-looking gargoyle” and worrying about the quiet (44-45). Later, walking through the park, she begins to look around, thinking of all the hiding places around her: “Trash cans, rides, food stalls, to name a few of the places a murderer could be watching me from right now. God, maybe I should take a break from the crime podcasts and vlogs” (53). The dark, Gothic island offers a perfect backdrop for Paisley’s fear, but she tries to dismiss it, telling herself she is overreacting. This is a moment of dramatic irony, since readers know that this is a thriller and that Paisley is going to be in danger. Therefore, all her attempts to calm herself only emphasize the danger she is actually in. Paisley ends her night visit by wondering if Will has been pranking her. She thinks, “Will is a dead man tomorrow if that was him” (55). Later, it is revealed that Will has been murdered. Paisley unknowingly foreshadowed his fate.

While Paisley is suspicious of Will’s disappearance, several of the other characters dismiss her fears. Will doesn’t strike her as the kind of person to play a prank in the park or to oversleep during breakfast. She also proves that he is missing when Camilla takes them to his room, arguing that he wouldn’t have left his phone behind: “She can explain the bed and even the makeup, but no one leaves their phone behind” (75). This moment establishes that Paisley has an analytical mind and is good at understanding other people’s motivations.

However, despite Paisley’s cleverness, she is not suspicious of Liam, who is the real killer. In fact, Liam uses her worry over Will as a chance to bond with her and to dismiss her fears. She thinks, “Can I trust him? I don’t think he’d tell on me” (61), and she tells Liam about her after-curfew expedition. In turn, he jokes with her about Will oversleeping and says, “Race you to the lobby” (65). Here, Liam uses his social media persona to his advantage. He portrays himself as a goofy, lovable jock who isn’t too serious. Paisley believes this, and he can kill Will and manipulate her and the others. By exploring the theme of The Deceptive Appearances of Social Media Personas, Preston reminds readers that appearances are deceiving, especially online. Paisley only knows these people through their online presence and brief in-person interactions, but she feels like they are real friends. She quickly learns that not everyone is trustworthy, and that she is only seeing a part of the real story.
