What are the consequences of their silence? What can be understood between characters without them speaking, and why? Take into account culture, gender, society, the family unit and/or the immigrant experience within your investigation, as applicable.

What is Lahiri’s position on cultural/social institutions such as marriage, family, and gender? Choose one institution that you feel Lahiri investigates within this collection, and then perform a critical analysis of 3-5 selected quotes in order to substantiate your perspective. How do characters both rely upon and stray from the dictums of these institutions in order to find personal fulfillment and peace? In what ways to these institutions both help and hinder these characters’ senses of their own identity and place in the world?
